Objectives:
The main idea is to
get our students using everyday English in a fun and practical way. While they
create eco-friendly gifts, they’ll be working with and learning new English
vocabulary related to the environment—words like recycle, plant, reuse, and more.
It’s a great opportunity to build their language skills without them even
noticing, while also encouraging creativity, teamwork, and real-world thinking.

Instructions:
To
carry out this activity in class, start by visiting the National Geographic
Kids page and choosing one or more of the plastic-free gift ideas that best fit
your students’ level. Prepare the needed materials—most of them are easy to
find and recyclable, like popsicle sticks, cardboard, or small pots. Before
starting, introduce some key English vocabulary related to the activity (like
glue, plant, decorate, recycle, etc.), and encourage students to use these
words as they work. Put them in small groups and guide them step-by-step in
English, helping them create their eco-friendly gifts. Once finished, have each
group present what they made, how they did it, and who it’s for—all in English.
You can finish with a short reflection on what they learned about both the
environment and the vocabulary. It’s fun, practical, and super engaging!

Activity:
1. 1. Ice-lolly stick photo frame: Kids glue 8 wooden sticks into a square, decorate with recycled stuff, add a favorite photo—no plastic!
2. 2. Memory card game: Make 20 cardboard squares from recycled cereal boxes; decorate with paired images from magazines for a fun, eco-friendly match game.
3. Herb planter: Kids decorate a clay pot, fill it with soil and herb seeds (mint, basil), creating a lovely and lasting gift
